Rafa's Diner
Rafa's Diner
- As mentioned in my last blog post, it’s safe to say me and my best friend are huge Mexican fans, so on a scorching day mid-summer, we visited Rafa’s Diner down the hidden lane in Finnieston. Rafa’s isn't really the sort of place you would stumble across, The restaurant itself is no bigger than a shed, but has a quaint seating area outside filled with groups of people enjoying food in the sun and with music playing , and it's easy to understand how this place has become so popular, given that it seems more like a family barbeque rather than a fussy west end restaurant, perfect for a Glasgow foodie looking for a chill meal.
The menu is substantial, and we end up ordering Fish tacos, A barbacoa beef burrito with guacamole on the side, with a portion of chips to share as well as 2 Jarrito’s (almost like a Mexican Fanta). The chips arrive first and as per, by the time the rest of the food comes, we’ve pretty much devoured every chip. We get to our actual order and it’s good, the tacos are spicy, and the fish isn’t super oily, the burritos nice and well filled, but I'd be lying if I said we weren't slightly underwhelmed. Maybe we had too high expectations, but I can only describe it as lacking a bit of punch, to compare it to the big taquero, it just wasn't as flavorful and felt a bit lack luster. It was by no means bad; we still ate both our meals, but I don’t know if it’s somewhere I would run back to. Rafa’s gives the vibe of being a down-to-earth, authentic Mexican, although I couldn’t fault the atmosphere, I think if you’re looking for a really great Mexican in Glasgow, you probably have better options.
For another great mexican option, have a look at The Big Taquero
